Pakistan summons US envoy over attack

“US Political Counselor Jonathan Pratt was summoned at the Foreign Office by America Director General Suhail Khan,” the Pakistani foreign ministry said in a Monday statement.

“Protest was lodged over yesterday’s US drone attack,” the statement added.

The formal protest came after a US drone on Sunday fired two missiles on a school building in Miranshah in North Waziristan and killed three people.

“The government of Pakistan strongly condemns the US drone attack that occurred in North Waziristan,” the ministry said.

“Such attacks are in total contravention of international law and established norms of interstate relations.”

North Waziristan and other tribal regions in northwestern Pakistan have been frequently targeted by US drones over the past few years.

On April 12, Pakistan’s parliament unanimously approved new guidelines for ties with the US, demanding an end to US assassination drone strikes in Pakistan.

On January 31, President Barack Obama confirmed that the United States used the unmanned aircraft in Pakistan.

The US says the operations target militants, although surveys show most of the victims are civilians.

According to a Pakistani human rights lawyer, Shahzad Akbar, over 2,800 of the 3,000 people killed over the past seven years in drone strikes in Pakistan were civilians.

The aerial attacks were initiated by former US President George W. Bush but have been escalated under President Obama.
