Pakistan to deport Osama bin Laden’s family on Wednesday

The family was deported on the orders of a Pakistani court, which on April 2
had convicted the three widows and two adult daughters of bin Laden for
illegally entering and residing in Pakistan.

The government and the family’s Pakistani lawyer have not released details
about the nine children.

Sharif is the mother of the two grown-up daughters, while the third and
youngest widow, Amal Ahmed Abdul-Fatah, is the mother of five minors.

At least one, and perhaps all, of the remaining four minors is bin Laden’s
grandchild from a deceased daughter.

State prosecutors had not pressed the more serious charges of aiding and
abetting a terrorist, which could have led to jail sentences of up to seven
years.

Pakistan was hugely embarrassed in March by press leaks of a statement given
to federal investigators by Abdul-Fatah, the youngest wife and a Yemeni
national.

She told them bin Laden and his family had lived in Pakistan since 2002 — and
not, as previously thought, 2006. He had previously lived in the northern
city of Peshawar and picturesque Swat Valley, while local supporters built
his Abbottabad residence.

The 14 family members were taken into custody by Pakistani security agencies
after surviving the US covert military operation last May 2 at the house.

American requests for access to the family were rejected by the Pakistani
government, which was infuriated that the U.S. had decided not to inform it
of the operation, to prevent the plans being leaked by any al-Qaeda
sympathisers.
