Tanveer Alam, a spokesman for Pakistan’s Ministry of Water and Power, told Reuters on Monday, “The Pakistan government decided in a meeting on Saturday that it is going to export a million tons of wheat to Iran through the barter trade system.”
“A delegation will go there (Iran) next week or in the beginning of April to work out what is possible,” Alam said.
Iranian officials had asked for one million tons of wheat through barter during a visit to Pakistan last month, he stated.
“We would prefer to get fertilizer in return but have to see what is on the table,” Alam said, adding, “There is also a possibility of iron ore being part of the deal.”
Iran has purchased about two million tons of wheat from several countries since February in an effort to build up its food stockpiles.
