Palm Beach Sheriffs Office Deputy Stole Prescription Pills From Elderly Man

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A Palm Beach County deputy who asked the community for donations when his child was sick is now behind bars accused of stealing from the people he swore to protect.

Rod Mattino enjoys his retirement spending time with his three grandchildren.

“My priorities are scheduling my life with my grandkids, so whatever they want,” he said.

His kindness extends beyond his family, when he saw a GoFundMePage set up to support Deputy Jason Cooke’s baby diagnosed with congenital diaphragmatic hernia he knew he had to help.

“You feel for that poor child, and you just hope that our medical technology where its gotten to can help a child like that,” Mattino said.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office also took to their Facebook page to spread awareness of the infant’s situations. Sheriff Ric Bradshaw is seen embracing Deputy Cooke in the photo.

However, Cooke is now locked up facing charges of grand theft and burglary.

A sheriff’s office report says after Hurricane Irma, deputies went to check on an elderly man who was passed out in his Boynton Beach home.

Paramedics took the man to the hospital. After everyone left, Cooke — who wasn’t on the original call — snuck inside the man’s home and stole a number of prescription pills, according to investigators.

The report said the incident was caught on video and when Cooke was confronted, he admitted to stealing the pills from that home and at another location during a death investigation.
