Panic Attacks: What They Are & How To Stop Them

Most people have experienced a panic or anxiety attack at some point in their lives. It’s an extreme and often unexpected feeling of panic, fear, or anxiety which overwhelms you. Some common physical symptoms are: racing heart, rapid breathing, and sweating. Sometimes it’s difficult to determine what the trigger or the root cause is.

A panic attack is always a sign of an underlying issue that needs to be resolved. Each of the 5 tools that I list below are intended to help bring an awareness of the root cause of the panic attacks. And, if necessary, you should see a qualified practitioner or therapist to help to deal with those underlying issues.

Before we get to the tools, here are some important things to remember when you’re in the thick of an anxiety attack:

  1. It will not last forever.
  2. The world is not going to end.
  3. This feeling will pass.

If you remember these three points, you’ll likely immediately begin to experience a relief of your symptoms.

Below I’ve listed four ways that I find extremely helpful in both preventing anxiety attacks and dealing with them as they come up:

1. Bach Rescue Remedy

Bach Rescue Remedy is a combination of 5 different essences that help you feel calm, focused, and relaxed. This remedy is available in drops, lozenges, creams, sprays, and pearls. If you feel a panic attack coming on put two drops under your tongue every fifteen minutes until you calm down. If you’re about to go into a stressful meeting or situation, you can use the drops beforehand to help you go in feeling calm and focused.

2.  Tea

Some teas that are great for anxiety attacks are passion flower, lavender, and chamomile. Not only do these herbs help to calm and balance the emotional body with their mild sedative effects, the process of making the tea is relaxing in itself. There have been several studies to show the effects of these teas on relieving stress and relaxing the nerves; they are definitely worth incorporating into your day. [1] [2]

 3. Magnesium

Magnesium is considered the most powerful mineral for relaxation. Unfortunately, so many of us are simply not getting enough of it in our diets. Magnesium helps improve our quality of sleep, relaxes our muscles, reduces inflammation in the body, and balances our moods. Ensuring you have enough magnesium in your diet through nutrition and/or supplementing can really help balance your emotions.

 4. EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)

EFT is an incredible tool that I use with my clients to help release emotions like panic/anxiety/fear. It works fast and efficiently by tapping on specific points on the body and effectively relaxing you enough to release the negative emotion you’re experiencing. In the video below I show you how to use EFT specifically for reducing feelings of panic/anxiety. Skip ahead to 3:35 for the process.

5. Meditation

I am a huge fan of meditation. It has numerous physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits. I find it extremely effective in reducing the amount of panic attacks and getting to the root cause of the panic (which isn’t always obvious). In the video below there is a bonus guided meditation aimed at releasing feelings of panic/anxiety.
