Philippines to buy Iranian LNG

Following several Asian and European countries, the Philippines, as the second most populous country in South East Asia, has expressed eagerness to engage with Iran’s oil and gas industry.

The South East Asian state has formally called for the purchase of Iranian gas as well as launching new LNG production projects in southern Iran.

Accordingly, a new round of talks between the two countries was held in Tehran at the presence of the Iranian Deputy Oil Minister for International Affairs Amir Hossein Zamaninia and the Philippine National Oil Company Exploration Corporation (PNOC-EC) President Pedro Aquino.

Iran’s Zamaninia pointed to the need to strengthen ties with the Philippines in oil, gas and energy industries saying “the Asian country is eager to construct LNG facilities in Iran with a production capacity of 18 million tons per year.”

The official also reported on the Philippines’ willingness to supply the required feed for the projects.

“The Philippines has suggested that Iran’s LNG production unit will be built by a consortium of PNOC and a European country, emphasized deputy oil minister noting “the Asian country seeks to supply feed gas required for the mentioned project.”

Zamaninia expressed hope towards continuation and expansion of collaborations with the Philippines reiterating “negotiations at expert level will offer more details for the Filipinos’ proposals providing the ground for more extensive bilateral cooperation in the field of oil and gas projects.”
