Plumbing "issues" delay construction at Brighton’s transport hub

The latest construction delays at the multi-million dollar Brighton Transport Hub near Hobart have been blamed on a mistake in the installation of water and sewerage infrastructure.

The $70 million taxpayer-funded hub was launched with great fanfare in November last year.

The state’s biggest freight carrier, Toll, signed on one month later and indicated it was ready to start building, but there is still no sign of activity.

Transport Infrastructure Services has confirmed water main and sewerage system issues are behind the delays

It is understood water and sewerage pipes were built in the wrong place and Southern Water wants them moved.

A department spokesman has confirmed there are “minor issues” with the new water main and sewer and they should be fixed in the next couple of months.

Shane Gregory says the construction contractor has to fix the problems at its cost, and it could take six to eight weeks.

Southern Water has not issued a statement.

Local frustration

The latest construction delay has frustrated the Brighton Mayor Tony Foster.

“You know I would have hoped that once the development application was approved by Brighton in April the work would have been able to be commenced soon there after,” he said.

“We’ve hung our hat on the fact that the Brighton Industrial Estate is going to drive the whole economy for Brighton.”

The development application is now before the Planning Appeals Tribunal.

Toll’s lease at Macquarie Point on Hobart’s waterfront ends in March next year.
