ILLEGAL drugs with a street value of half a billion dollars have been seized as a result of a police investigation.

Australian Federal Police deputy commissioner of operations Andrew Colvin and Customs and Border Protection deputy chief executive Mike Pezzullo will speak to the media about the operation in Sydney on Tuesday morning.

The seizure comprises half a tonne of illicit substances.

It is understood it is the largest seizure of ice and the third biggest seizure of heroin in the AFP’s history.

The bust came after an investigation by the AFP and Australian Customs and the Border Protection Service.

A Customs spokeswoman refused to answer queries, saying details would be revealed later.

The bust is bigger than the $440 million of ecstasy found in a shipment of tomato cans in 2008 which led to the jailing of drugs mastermind Pasquale Barbaro in May this year.

Barbaro, 50, the son of a Calabrian immigrant, and his cousin Saverio Zirilli, 55, were hit with minimum 30-year and 18-year sentences respectively over the international drug ring conspiracy involving 4.4 tonnes of ecstasy and almost 100kg of cocaine.
