Polish police foil assassination attempt on president

Prosecutors show reporters a video of an alleged Polish terrorist testing explosive bomb devices in Poland, November 20, 2012.

Polish security forces have foiled a bomb plot to blow up the parliament and assassinate the Polish president, prime minister, and the members of parliament.

Polish state prosecutor, Mariusz Krason, on Tuesday said the main suspect, identified as a 45-year-old chemistry professor at Krakow’s University of Agriculture in southern Poland, was arrested on suspicion of plotting to detonate “four tones of explosives” in a car outside parliament during a budget debate likely due in December.

Krakow’s chief prosecutor said the suspect, who was reportedly arrested on November 9, posed a “real danger” to Poland’s President Bronislaw Komorowski and Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

The bomb plotter was found in possession of the high explosive TNT, gunpowder and other bomb making equipment.

Prosecutors have charged him with planning a terrorist attack and he could face up to five years in jail.

During the court proceedings, he confessed that he wanted to assassinate the state leaders. Court officials showed video evidence of him testing explosions in Poland.

At the time of his arrest, the police detained three others suspected of aiding in the extremist’s plot.

The extremist, named ‘Brunon K.’, believed “foreign powers exercised power in Poland rather than real Poles,” Krason said.

Prime Minister Tusk views the man as “fascinated by Anders Behring Breivik”, who bombed and shot 77 people in Norway last year.

Krakow’s prosecutors see ‘Brunon K.’ as Poland’s Breivik due to similarities in “his operation and his professional approach.”

This is the first assassination attempt on a polish president since 90 years ago, when a far-right extremist assassinated the then president Gabriel Narutowicz.
