MID the horror of the recent mass sexual assault by immigrants in the German city of Cologne, one so-called asylum seeker sneered at the police: “I am a Syrian. You have to treat me kindly. Mrs Merkel invited me.”
Those words encapsulate the brutish arrogance and sense of entitlement among so many of the new arrivals who believe they are untouchable.
But his statement also highlights the destructive folly of Europe’s politicians, led by the bovine, self-regarding German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
In the name of compassion, Merkel and the rest of the deluded ruling class willfully have created a relentless influx of foreigners whose primitive, misogynistic and superstitious outlook is incompatible with our liberal civilisation.
At first, as the teeming hordes reached Europe from North Africa, the Middle East and Asia last summer, our rulers showered themselves with congratulations at their supposed humanity.
But now the appalling consequences of the open floodgates are becoming ever more apparent. Humanity was certainly in short supply in Cologne on New Year’s Eve as more than 150 women were brazenly attacked by gangs of rampaging immigrants.
Moreover this experience was repeated right across Germany in cities as far south as Munich and as far north as Hamburg.
In Bielefeld, a crowd of 500 men forced their way into a nightclub and assaulted women, while four Syrians have been arrested for the gang rape of two teenage girls in the town of Weil am Rhine.
Similar assaults have been reported beyond Germany in Austria, Sweden, Switzerland and Finland.
The problem is bound to worsen as levels of immigration continue to rise. In Germany alone 1.1million refugees settled last year and at least 3,200 continue to arrive every day.
The German Interior Ministry estimates that at least another one million migrants will reach Europe this year.
What is so striking about this unceasing floodtide is that it is overwhelmingly masculine.
According to a United Nations report last autumn, 75 per cent of the migrants pouring into Europe are young single men, most of them Muslims.
Contrary to fashionable Left-wing propaganda about the benefits of mass immigration, too many of them are more interested in exploiting women and welfare than doing work.
As the shadow of aggressive intimidation spreads across Europe, a climate of fear will develop.
Only at the weekend the chief of police in Vienna said women should not go out alone at night while the Mayor of Cologne Henriette Reker said the city would introduce “a code of conduct” for women, a classic example of blaming the victim.
Freedom for women used to be a great asset of modern European society. Now it is being eroded by uncontrolled immigration. That process will dramatically accelerate once Turkey is admitted to the EU, which is all too inevitable.
With 75million Turks enjoying the right to settle anywhere in the EU and migrant routes through the Mediterranean even easier, many parts of urban Europe will come to resemble the Middle East and Africa in all their squalor, violence, fear and corruption.
The reality is that thanks to the political class Europe is entering a new dark age. Sexual assaults were just the latest in a series of catastrophes that EU leaders have inflicted on its peoples.
Through their determination to destroy the traditional concept of nationhood, promote open borders and impose cultural diversity their ideology has brought meltdown to Europe’s economies and terrorism to her streets.
No bunch of anarchists or enemy army could have caused such irreversible damage. The bitter irony is that their pro-immigration, anti-nationhood federalist dogma was borne out of revulsion at the Second World War.
Yet in practice their approach has led to the import of barbarism and anti-Semitism on an epic scale. In the same vein they presented the EU as a means of putting a straitjacket on Germany.
But actually the EU, through its fixation with free movement, has enabled a domineering, race-fixated Teutonic regime to play havoc with all our lives. Europe’s rulers will never admit the failure of their disastrous experiment.
They are desperate to maintain the illusion that multi-culturalism has worked. That is why there was such a ruthless cover-up by German authorities and broadcasters of the Cologne scandal until the news leaked out on social media.
Ridiculously the police at first claimed the New Year celebrations were “largely peaceful” and “relaxed”. The same impulse to mislead and minimise the abuses can be seen throughout the elite.
So the German public broadcaster ZDF justified its early refusal to report the news of the attacks because it did “not want to spread a bad mood. The migrants deserve better”.
The same impulse for deceit was shown by Left-wing commentators who tried to explain away the assaults by reference to poverty and language.
But why on earth is it our duty to accommodate people who contribute nothing but misery and who utterly despise our values?
The authorities can be ruthless when they want. On Saturday in Cologne, police deployed 1,700 officers and used water cannon at a rally organised by anti-immigration protestors.
But craven political correctness means there is no will to show anything like the same toughness towards predatory migrants. And that is why European civilisation is in crisis.
