Poll: US economic confidence falls again

Americans are increasingly pessimistic about the future of the US economy, with confidence in the economy reaching the lowest level since December, according to a new poll.

The Gallup Economic Confidence Index dipped to -18 for the week ending Feb. 9, the lowest weekly reading so far in 2014. The index was 10 points more positive in early February 2013 than it is now.

The Gallup Economic Confidence Index is the average of two components: Americans’ views on current economic conditions in the United States and their perceptions of whether the economy is getting better or worse.

In the survey, 39 percent of Americans said the economy was getting better, while 55 percent felt it was getting worse.

At the same time, 18 percent of Americans rated current economic conditions as excellent or good, while 37 percent called it poor.

The US economy only added 113,000 jobs in January, well below expectations and the second month in a row the report provided disappointing figures.

Republicans have been hammering the Obama administration over the poor growth, arguing the new healthcare law, known as Obamacare, and other White House policies are dragging back the economy.

Obamacare will cost the US the equivalent of 2.5 million workers in the next decade, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated in a report released last week.

Despite recent gains in the US economy, nearly half of Americans are living in a state of “persistent economic insecurity,” according to the Washington-based nonprofit Corporation for Enterprise Development.
