At least 16 people have been killed and several others severely injured in a powerful explosion on the outskirts of the Nigerian capital, Abuja.
Witnesses said the blast was caused by a car bomb that exploded at a busy road in the Nyanya Motor Park in Abuja on Thursday night.
“There was a loud blast then a ball of fire,” media outlets quoted eyewitnesses as saying, adding, “There were many dead bodies and ambulances were rushing there.”
The explosion took place near the site of last month’s bombing that left at least 75 people dead.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. Similar incidents, however, are usually blamed on members of the Boko Haram group.
Abuja and its adjacent areas have been rocked by deadly bombings several times over the past few years.
In a separate development, people held a protest rally in Abuja to urge authorities to do more to secure the release of more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by militants.
The protesters, including women, relatives of the girls and civil servants, gathered outside the parliament building, vowing to continue their rallies until the freedom of the abducted students.
In May 2013, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in three northeastern states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa.
According to recent figures gathered by the United Nations, more than 1,200 people have been killed in violence in the troubled regions since the state of emergency was imposed.
