Eid, who was heading to Greece in a business trip, had not been informed of the travel ban or investigated before the incident, the statement said.

“The police regime in Egypt flouts the law; the military are in the streets, jails are wide open, and the regime’s media is poised for defamation campaigns against critics,” the statement added.

“Even if the decision was issued by a judicial entity, are travel bans and prison terms decided before any investigation or informing the innocent defendant until proven guilty by the details of his case?”

Eid called on the Attorney-General to investigate the move to prove that the prosecution is an investigation authority rather than an entity “that looks for charges.”

A number of people have been banned from leaving or entering Egypt in recent months.

The authorities at Cairo International Airport denied German researcher of Egyptian origins Atef Botros from entering Egypt in late January. Botros is the founder of Berlin-based Mayadin al-Tahrir Organization, a body aims “to enhance the capacities of marginalized groups in Egypt,” the organization’s official website says.

In July, Egypt’s security officials at Cairo airport prevented German activist Silke Kumpf Sunday from entering Egypt, after her name was put on the airport’s blacklist.

In June, Egyptian activist Mohamed Lotfy was prevented from traveling to Germany where he was to speak before the Bundestag about human rights violations in Egypt.
