Protesters seize Donetsk railway post

Pro-Russian protesters have seized the control center of Donetsk railroads, amid Kiev’s military operation in the city of Slavyansk.

A spokesman for Donetsk railways said on Friday that the protesters seized the command post near the city of Yasynuvata, just north of Donetsk.

The unnamed spokesman added that the pro-Russian protesters practically stopped all train movements.

This is while Ukraine’s army is conducting a full-scale offensive in the nearby city of Slavyansk, using armored vehicles, helicopters and tanks.

Ukraine’s Interior Ministry says the country’s army forces are now controlling at least nine checkpoints set up by pro-Russian protesters.

According to reports, at least one protester has been killed and several others have been injured in gun battles between the two sides in various locations.

Kiev also confirmed two army helicopters have been shot down by pro-Russian gunmen earlier in the day, killing two pilots. In addition, another pilot was injured and taken to hospital by the armed men.

Slavyansk, with a population of nearly 160,000, is among over a dozen of eastern cities, which are under the control of pro-Russian protesters.

Meanwhile, Russia has condemned Kiev’s military operation in Slavyansk, saying the move deals a final blow to the Geneva peace deal aimed at easing the crisis in the country.

Pro-Russia protests gained momentum in the eastern and southern parts of Ukraine after Crimea declared independence from the former Soviet state and formally became part of the Russian Federation following a referendum in March.
