PSNI defuses bomb near G8 summit

The bomb was found and made safe in an abandoned car outside one of the most heavily fortified police stations in Northern Ireland only 16 miles from the Lough Erne golf resort where the G8 summit is due to be held this summer.

“Once again our community has been disrupted and the lives of residents put at risk by an element intent on causing loss of life and disruption. The people responsible for this have no regard for the lives of anyone in our community. It is fortunate that no-one was killed or seriously injured as a result of this reckless act”, said the PSNI district commander, Pauline Shields.

Police said the device was onboard a Silver Volkswagen Bora car, abandoned on the Derrylin Road in the early hours of Friday. It consisted of approximately 60kg of homemade explosives contained in a beer keg.

Police believe the vehicle containing the device was destined for Lisnaskea PSNI station, situated near homes and a church. Twenty families had to be evacuated from their homes while Army technical officers made the bomb safe.

US president Barack Obama, German chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian president Vladimir Putin are among those expected to attend the G8 meeting at Lough Erne near Enniskillen and there has been a heavy security presence in the area ahead of the event.

A massive security operation will be mounted and thousands of police officers from UK forces drafted in to help bolster PSNI numbers.

Prime suspects are dissident republicans opposed to the peace process and responsible for a series of previous shootings and bombings.

“The abandoned device dealt with by PSNI sadly reminds us that there are still a small minority who are determined to damage communities and cause death and disruption”, said Northern Ireland secretary Theresa Villiers.
