Puig’s rough week continues with second All-Star Game snub (Video)

Freeman and Puig each broke the record for most votes in the history of the contest. Yet Freeman’s 19.6 million votes were more than enough to win, ending the last chance Puig had to make the All-Star Game. Still, if any National League All-Star gets hurt this weekend, he could get in as an injury replacement.

NL All-Star manager Bruce Bochy had his chance to put him in last weekend, but the decision was ultimately left in the fans hands. That was supposed to be enough to get Puig in, given how he has taken baseball by storm for weeks. As it turned out, fans either liked Freeman more or were much more organized in voting for him.

The final results came after a rough series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, which still resulted in a Dodgers sweep. But for Puig, his average dipped below .400 for the first time, while further critiques about his attitude and popularity came out.

Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero predicted that Puig was “creating a bad reputation” in the league. He cited how Puig ran over him at the plate during the Dodgers’ win on July 9, then gave him a “death glare” after getting up. He also cited reports that Puig snubbed 2001 Diamondbacks World Series hero Luis Gonzalez when he tried to introduce himself, according to AZ Central.

The Diamondbacks and Dodgers are developing a bitter rivalry, with Los Angeles getting closer to overtaking Arizona in the NL West. Outside of that context, Puig’s attitude and zealous style of play still receive more scrutiny the higher he rises.

Yet as the backlash rises for Puig, the Dodgers record is rising as well, as they went over .500 for the first time since April 15 on July 11. As for Puig, he went 2-for-4 and boosted his average back to .397. If this is how he and the Dodgers respond to backlash and lost votes, they have nothing to worry about.
