nsnbc : Russian President Vladimir Putin, on Monday, appointed the Russian Federation’s former Deputy Foreign Minister and Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov to be the country’s next ambassador to the United States.

Anatoly Antonov_Russia_2016_(archives)The office of the Russian Federation’s Presidency released a statement on the Kremlin’s website saying Antonov was appointed by presidential decree. The former Deputy Foreign Minister will be replacing Ambassador Sergei Kislyak.

On its website, the Kremlin stated “In another executive order, the President relieved Mr Antonov of his duties as Deputy Foreign Minister. .. Mr Putin also signed an executive order releiving Sergei Kislyak of his duties as Russia’s Ambassador to the United States and Russia’s Permanent Observer at the Organisation of American States in Washington.

Kihlyak was drawn into controversy over alleged Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections after meeting with members of then presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign team.

The appointment of Antonow to the post in Washington would suggest that Moscow perceives policies involving insights into military dynamics as an important aspect in bilateral relations. Antonov has also served as Deputy Defense Minister. He was personally sanctioned by the European Union after the eruption of the crisis in Crimea and EU as well as Russian involvement in the crisis there.

Antonov is widely perceived as a hardliner who can counter the Trump administration’s “America First” policy by representing a “Russia First” policy as long as Moscow may deem such a policy to be necessary.

The news about Antonov’s appointment on Monday, came as the U.S. Embassy in Moscow temporarily suspended processing non-immigrant visa applications in response to Russia’s expulsion of U.S. diplomats.

In a statement released on Monday, the U.S. Embassy in Moscow said “Due to the Russian government-imposed cap on U.S. diplomatic personnel in Russia, all non-immigrant visa operations across Russia will be suspended on Aug. 23.”

The move is the latest in a series of tit-for-tat measures between Russia and the United States as part of an ongoing diplomatic spat over fresh sanctions codified by U.S. President Donald Trump on Aug. 2.
