Coalition education spokesman Christopher Pyne says Education Minister Peter Garrett is misleading the public on the progress of education funding reforms.
Australia’s education ministers met in Sydney on Thursday to discuss an overhaul proposed by the government’s Gonski Review.
Mr Garrett said after the meeting there still a great deal of work to do but his department would try to have legislation drawn up by the end of the year.
But Mr Pyne says a draft resolution of the Standing Council on School Education and Early Childhood shows ministers have neither endorsed the Gonski proposal nor made any commitment to new funding principles and have many concerns about proposed changes.
“On Sky PM Agenda yesterday, Schools Minister Peter Garrett said concerns over the indexation of school funding weren’t raised at the meeting yesterday,” Mr Pyne said.
“But the document obtained by the coalition clearly shows that indexation was on the agenda at the meeting.
“Mr Garrett’s attempts to mislead and decry the coalition’s genuine concerns have blown up in his face with the release of this document today.”
