Pyongyang to hold live-fire drills

North Korea will reportedly conduct live-fire drills near its disputed maritime border with South Korea.

Pyongyang notified Seoul on Tuesday that it will conduct drills near the islands of Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong, said South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok.

The South Korean spokesman added that “If any shell lands on our side of the border, South Korea will respond strongly.”

The announcement prompted South Korean officials to warn residents on the border islands to take precautions and fishing vessels were told to stay away from the area.

The live-fire drills in the Yellow Sea are reportedly to be held on Tuesday and will be the second military exercise by North Korea in recent weeks.

On March 31, Pyongyang conducted similar drills which sparked an exchange of fire between the two Koreas. Seoul said it responded to shells landing in its waters.

Tensions have been on the rise between the two Koreas over the past few months amid South’s annual joint military exercises with the United States.

North Korea has carried out a number of rocket and short-range missile launches in protest over the drills which lasted from February 24 until April 18.

Pyongyang, who says its activities are solely for the purpose of self-defense, has often slammed the drills carried out by South Korea and the United States as a rehearsal for an invasion.
