Qld Labor candidate resigns

A young Labor candidate has stepped down for allegedly posting offensive remarks linking homosexuality with paedophilia.

Peter Watson, 19, resigned as candidate for the rural seat of Southern Downs, a statement from Labor’s state secretary Anthony Chisholm said on Monday night.

Mr Chisholm’s statement says he accepts Mr Watson’s resignation but failed to explain the allegations against him.

And a spokeswoman for Mr Chisholm declined to shed any light.

However, The Brisbane Courier Mail says Mr Watson has been linked to online posts making offensive remarks describing homosexuals as “degenerates” who should be “wiped out”.

“Homosexuality and paedophilia go hand in hand with each other,” a post written with his name states, the paper says.

“To deal with one you must deal with the other in order to wipe them from society.”

In another post under the his name, Mr Watson is said to have masqueraded as a neo-Nazi to “get information out of the enemy”.

“Allegations have been made against Mr Watson, which he flatly denies,” Mr Chisholm said.

“We were unaware of these allegations when he was endorsed late last year.

“Nonetheless, I have accepted his resignation so this issue does not distract from … this election campaign.”

Southern Downs is a rural electorate stretching along the NSW border and to the south and south-west of Toowoomba.

Major centres include Warwick, Allora, Stanthorpe, Millmerran, Inglewood and Goondiwindi.
