Queen stresses importance of diversity

The Commonwealth can play an important role in bridging cultural and national divides, the Queen says.

In her Commonwealth Day message, the Queen said modern technology was allowing people across the world to understand how others live.

“A remarkable insight we gain from such windows on the world is that, however different outward appearances may be, we share a great deal in common,” her majesty said in a statement.

She said the Commonwealth would focus on promoting understanding across cultures in 2012.

“Connecting Cultures, our Commonwealth theme this year, encourages us to consider the special opportunities we have, as members of this unique gathering of nations, to celebrate an extraordinary cultural tapestry that reflects our many individual and collective identities,” she said.

The annual Commonwealth Day Observance will take place at Westminster Abbey in London on Monday, in the presence of the Queen.

Australian philanthropist and non-executive chairman of Fortescue Metals Group Andrew Forrest will speak at the event.

Parliamentary Secretary Jan McLucas will represent Prime Minister Julia Gillard at Westminster Abbey.
