Rayney pleads not guilty at murder trial

Prominent Perth barrister Lloyd Rayney has pleaded not guilty to the wilful murder of his estranged wife as his trial begins in a packed courtroom.

Rayney is charged over the death of former Supreme Court registrar, Corryn Rayney, who went missing on August 7, 2007, after leaving her weekly bootscooting class.

Rayney was arrested more than three years later. He has vehemently denied any involvement in the murder of the 44-year-old mother-of-two.

He arrived at court on Monday with his teenage daughters, Caitlyn and Sarah, by his side.

The former chief justice of the Northern Territory Supreme Court, Brian Martin, is presiding over the trial without a jury.

More than 100 people, including prominent lawyers, were in the West Australian Supreme Court for the start of the trial.

Prosecutor John Agius, QC, told the judge it would now run for two months, down from the previously planned five months.

He expected to take almost two days to complete his opening address.

Rayney’s lawyer David Edwardson, QC, said he would not be making an opening address.

The court will make a site visit on Wednesday to several locations including the Bentley Community Hall where Ms Rayney attended her dance classes, Kings Park where her body was found, and the street where her car was found.
