Red Cross staff kidnapped in Afghanistan

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Afghanistan says five of its aid workers have been kidnapped in the country’s western province of Herat.

Marek Resich, an ICRC spokesman, said on Saturday that the workers were traveling on the road when they were abducted by a local armed group.

“The ICRC is currently in contact at various levels to secure the safe release of its team,” he said.

Raouf Ahmadi, a police spokesman in Herat Province, said the armed men stopped an ICRC vehicle as the aid workers were delivering sheep to local villages, adding that the attackers took both workers and the sheep that could indicate that the kidnapping was part of a robbery and not a militant attack.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the abduction, but local authorities usually blame Taliban militants for carrying out such moves as well as bomb attacks in Afghanistan.

Taliban militants use roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to target Afghan forces, foreign troops and civilians.

The group has vowed to escalate its attacks before US-led troops leave the country in a planned 2014 withdrawal.
