A high-ranking Senate Republican leader says a government shutdown would be possible should President Barack Obama take any executive action on immigration policy.
John Thune, who chairs the Senate Republican Conference, said the party helped open the possibility to shut down the government in a bid to prevent any move that would allow millions of undocumented immigrants to stay and work in the United States.
“It [shutdown] doesn’t solve the problem. But look, we’re having those discussions… We’re going to continue to meet about this. I know the House leaders are talking about, the Senate leaders are talking about it,” Thune told Fox News on Sunday.
“Republicans are looking at different options about how best to respond to the president’s unilateral action, which many people believe is unconstitutional, unlawful action on this particular issue,” Thune added.
He said the president’s expected use of executive power on the immigration issue was what fueled partisanship and lack of cooperation.
Several Republicans, however, said they want to find alternatives that would stop short of directly threatening a government shutdown.
Obama’s latest move in changing the country’s immigration policy would grant temporary legal status for many illegal immigrants in the country.
He is expected to announce a series of executive actions on immigration issues this week.
Obama’s decision has been criticized by his opponents who argue that the order would have “devastating effect” on American citizens.
His critics say regardless of whether Congress passes a bill, the president still has the authority to halt many of the deportations and to reform the immigration system in the United States.
