Rights group slams Mubarak verdict

A leading Egyptian human rights organization has criticized the country’s justice system for taking sides after a court’s decision to dismiss murder charges against the ousted president, Hosni Mubarak.

The decision entrenched the impunity enjoyed by security forces in the North African country, said the Cairo-based Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) in a press release on Saturday.

“The verdict further reinforces concerns about the alarmingly selective justice system in Egypt, which appears more intent on settling political scores and punishing dissent than establishing justice,” the press release added.

The rights group further stressed that “justice was dealt another severe blow” following Mubarak’s verdict.

Meanwhile, Farid al-Deeb, Mubarak’s lawyer, announced that the jailed former Egyptian president could be released early after serving two-thirds of a corruption sentence and the dropping of murder charges.

On Saturday, an Egyptian court dismissed charges against Mubarak in connection with the killing of hundreds of protesters during the 2011 uprising that ended his decades-long rule.

The court also acquitted Mubarak of a corruption charge. However, the toppled president will remain in prison as he is serving a three-year sentence at a military hospital for a separate graft case.

Seven of Mubarak’s commanders were also acquitted in relation to the deaths of some of the roughly 800 demonstrators during the uprising.

This comes as public attention has largely been diverted from Mubarak’s case by the trial of Mohamed Morsi, the president who was ousted by the army in July 2013, over the deaths of anti-government protesters.

Morsi has been also implicated in two other cases. He is facing trial on charges of espionage and orchestrating a prison break three years ago.
