Roku boots RT from its global platform

RT did not return a request for comment.

For days after Russia invaded Ukraine, critics had been calling for Roku and other platforms to cease offering RT programming. Earlier on Tuesday, the National Association of Broadcasters called on broadcasters “to cease carrying any state-sponsored programming with ties to the Russian government or its agents.”

“While the First Amendment protects freedom of speech, however, it does not prevent private actors from exercising sound, moral judgment,” the statement read, in part. “While we know that airings of such programs are extremely limited, we believe that our nation must stand fully united against misinformation and for freedom and democracy across the globe.”

TV services that offer RT in the United States are limited. Neither Spectrum nor Comcast, two of the biggest cable providers, offer the channel, meaning that moves by the DIRECTV and Roku will hiit to the network’s footprint on televisions in the United States.

Dish Network, a satellite television company, continues to offer the channel. When asked if the company would still broadcast RT’s programming in light of the situation unfolding in Ukraine, a spokesperson did not address the question directly.

“Our thoughts are with all the people of Ukraine, and particularly with our team members in the country,” a company spokesperson said. “We are closely monitoring the situation.”

RT is a Russian state-controlled international television network. It has been widely criticized as being an arm of Russian propaganda efforts and forced to register as a foreign agent under Department of Justice scrutiny in 2017.
