Rousseff Fails to Appear at Defense Hearing of Brazilian Senate’s Impeachment Commission

nsnbc : Dilma Rousseff, the suspended President of Brazil, on Wednesday, failed to attend her defense hearing before the Senate’s Impeachment Commission. Rousseff, who had been expected to speak in her own defense sent a written response, presented by her lawyer and former Justice Minister Jose Eduardo Cardozo instead.

Dilma Rousseff_Brazil_May 2016On Tuesday Dilma Rousseff used social media to announce that she planned not to attend the Commission’s defense hearing on Wednesday. Rousseff noted that she would “consider the possibility of appearing in front of the Senate, but at another time”.

Jose Eduardo Cardozo read out Rousseff’s statement in which Rousseff denounced the attempted impeachment as purely politically motivated. Rousseff reiterated that the fiscal maneuvers, for which she is being investigated, had no impact on the government’s fiscal budget.

On Tuesday, prior to the hearing where Rousseff, according to some of her adversaries “went AWOL”, senators with the Commission listened to testimony from experts from both the defense and the prosecution.

Some of the experts concurred that Rousseff, while she did approve the allegedly illegal budget movements, they could not be described as a crime for which Rousseff could be held responsible.

Rousseff was temporarily suspended on May 11 this year. The suspension can be upheld for 180 days, pending a full impeachment trial, which is scheduled for August. A two-third majority vote in the Senate is required to fully impeach Rousseff and to bar her from public office for eight years.
