Russia has condemned a resolution by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) that blames Moscow for the crisis in Ukraine.
The resolution was passed on Wednesday by 154 votes in favor, 26 against and 14 abstentions.
“It is obvious to us that the document was made hurriedly and pursues purely political goals,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
“Against the principles of fairness and objectivity, and citing unknown but clearly tendentiously selected sources, the report gives very doubtful evaluations and conclusions,” the statement added.
Alexei Pushkov, chairman of the Russian Duma’s Foreign Affairs Committee and head of the Russian delegation to the PACE, also described the accusations against Moscow as “political aggression”.
Russian lawmaker Leonid Slutsky, deputy head of the Russian delegation to PACE, also slammed the document as typifying double standards.
The resolution condemns what it calls Russia’s military aggression and annexation of Crimea in violation of international law.
The resolution also describes a recently held referendum in the peninsula as unconstitutional and says it will not recognize the outcome.
Tensions between the Western powers and Moscow heightened after Crimea declared independence from Ukraine and formally applied to become part of the Russian Federation following the referendum on March 16.
On March 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law documents that officially made the Black Sea peninsula part of the Russian territory despite condemnation from the West and the new Ukrainian government.
The move sparked angry reactions from the United States and the European Union, both imposing punitive measures against a number of Russian officials and authorities in Crimea.
