Russia’s Foreign Ministry has denounced the West for what it calls a destructive policy toward the crisis in Ukraine, calling on the US and its European allies to change their stance.
The Russian ministry’s remarks were made in a statement released on Friday, as the Kiev government launched an offensive on pro-Russian protesters in the eastern city of Slavyansk.
Moscow also urged the acting Kiev government to end its “punitive operation” in the east and south of the country.
“We firmly demand that the West renounce its destructive policies towards Ukraine and those who declared themselves the Kiev authorities immediately stop the reprisal raid and any violence against its own people,” the Russian ministry said.
The ministry added that the West is “closing the door upon the peaceful resolution of” the Ukraine crisis by supporting the acting Kiev government.
Meanwhile, EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, called for a reduction in violence and an end to the occupation of state buildings by pro-Russia protesters in eastern Ukraine.
The acting Kiev government launched a military offensive earlier on Friday, using armored vehicles, helicopters and tanks in Slavyansk.
Ukraine’s Interior Ministry says the country’s army forces are now controlling at least nine checkpoints set up by pro-Russian protesters.
Reports say at least one protester has been killed and several others have been injured in gun battles between the two sides in various locations.
Kiev also confirmed two army helicopters have been shot down by pro-Russian gunmen earlier in the day, killing two pilots. In addition, another pilot was injured and taken to hospital by the armed men.
