The Russian Defense Ministry has announced that a carrier rocket will launch from a space center in the north of the country to put three military satellites into orbit.
The Russian Rokot carrier will transfer Kosmos-series satellites on Wednesday at 4:31 a.m. Moscow time (0031 GMT) from the Plesetsk space center, said Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Dmitry Zenin.
Zenin said the satellites are scheduled to arrive at their assigned orbits some two hours later.
He did not provide further details on the task of the satellites, which are named Kosmos-2488, Kosmos-2489 and Kosmos-2490.
It is considered the fourth Rokot launch from Plesetsk center in the current year.
The Rokot carrier is manufactured by the Moscow-based Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center. It is an improved version of the RS-18 (SS-19 Stiletto) two-stage ballistic missile, which is being removed from Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces.
Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces is a military branch of the armed forces that controls the country’s land-based inter-continental ballistic missiles.
The rocket can put spaceships of less than two tons weight into near-earth orbits.
