“The visit of the Russian minister to the country takes place within the framework of strengthening and deepening relations of friendship, solidarity and bilateral cooperation,” a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique says. The visit is part of Lavrov’s ministerial tour of Africa, which also yook him to Namibia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia and Angola.

In addition to meeting Mozambican President Felipe Nyusi , the Russian foreign minister will also meet his Mozambican counterpart, Foreign Minister José Pacheco. “The leaders will review bilateral cooperation and exchange views on the political and economic situation of the two countries,” as well as “on issues of mutual interest in the international arena”, the ministry concludes.

Both Russia and Belarus are currently rebuilding and reinforcing ties to Mozambique. Mozambique and Angola were important strategic partner for the Soviet Union during the cold war. Bilateral relations between Mozambique and Russia diminished after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Communist block. Mozambique is currently poised to becoming the world’s third-largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by the mid-2020 and Mozambique is – willingly or not – re-assuming a more important role in the world of superpower-dictated geopolitics.
