S Korea subway crash injures over 170

More than 170 people have been injured in the South Korean capital city of Seoul when two subway trains collided.

Briefing reporters, fire department official Kim Kyung-Soo said 172 people were wounded in the train collision on Friday.

There have been no immediate reports of any fatalities so far.

According to reports, one train was halted in Sangwangsimni station in eastern Seoul when the second train crashed into its rear around 3:30 p.m. (0630 GMT).

Meanwhile, the Yonhap news agency said that the two last cars of the stationary train went off the rails by the force of the impact.

The incident comes after a ferry tragedy on April 16 left around 300 dead or missing — most of them schoolchildren — after the boat turned over and sank.

Of the 476 people on board the ferry, only 175 were rescued.

Relatives of the passengers have censured the South Korean government, saying delays in launching the rescue raised the death toll.

Critics say valuable time was wasted during the first emergency call from a passenger to the Coast Guard office, as the eighteen-year old boy was asked to provide longitude and latitude information.

The ship’s captain, Lee Joon-seok, initially told passengers to stay in their rooms and took half an hour to issue an evacuation order, by which time the ship was tilting too severely for many people to get out.
