SA bids for ‘fair deal’ in Murray plans

Irrigators, environmentalists, scientists and state government ministers will meet in Adelaide on Monday in a bid to find common ground on the plan to save the Murray.

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill has called the talks, hoping to present a united front from the state on changes to the Murray-Darling Basin draft plan.

The premier has said the plan appears to be inadequate, and irrigators have criticised it both for not returning enough water to the Murray and for not recognising initiatives they had already made to conserve water.

The state government is still being guided by its scientific advice, that 3500 to 4000 gigalitres should be returned to the river system to return it to health.

The draft plan for the Murray-Darling Basin has proposed returning just 2750 gigalitres for environmental flows.

Mr Weatherill has not ruled out taking High Court action to ensure South Australia gets a fair deal.

He said last week he would not sign up to an inadequate plan.

“This isn’t a conversation about a small issue,” the premier said.

“This is about our principal environmental, economical and social asset.”

The Wilderness Society has called on SA’s state and federal politicians to stand united to ensure enough water is returned to the Murray to ensure its long-term health and keep the mouth open.

“South Australians want the river restored to health,” spokesman Peter Owen said.

“There’s one way to achieve this and it means reducing the water allocation of upstream irrigators.”

The Wilderness Society has backed the state government’s decision to take legal advice on possible court action.

“If the draft basin plan won’t deliver, then the High Court option must be explored in order to restore our rights to a healthy river,” he said.

“The stakes could not be higher.”
