A Samoan choreographer has been appointed as resident artist to Pacific Dance New Zealand.

Tupe Lualua is a 10 year veteran of dance and is an arts lecturer at Whitireia polytechnic in New Zealand.

She has told Radio Australia’s Pacific Beat the purpose of her residency is to instill a strong sense of confidence in Pacific dance to anyone who wants to get involved.

“We teach them the foundation of Siva Samoa, Samoan dance, the basic fundamentals of the movements, where they come from, what they mean as well as all the history behind the songs,” Ms Lualua said.

“From there, we develop it to suit where we are today.

“It’s taking the foundation of Siva Samoa that we already know and mixing it with what we see today….Dance is a representation of your environment and everyday influences,” she said.
