Children in Fukushima, Japan are under study to determine the influence of radiation exposure on thyroid cancer risk because of the explosion at the Daiichi nuclear plant 4 years ago.

The findings of this study, that it is too soon to say either way, will be revealed at the 15th International Thyroid Congress (ITC) and 85th Annual Meeting of the American Thyroid Association (ATA) in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

Shinichi Suzuki, professor with the department of thyroid and endocrinology at Fukushima Medical University, said that histologically confirmed cases among Fukushima-area children and adolescents who underwent thyroid cancer surgery “don’t give us a clear view” of how many of those cases are attributable to radiation exposure.

Shigenobu Nagataki, of the Nagasaki University added that the researchers “did not find regional differences in the prevalence of thyroid cancer within Fukushima Prefecture” and there was a lack of “substantial grounds for accepting that these cases are due to the nuclear accident.”

Suzuki added that the thyroid cancers identified in post – disaster screenings appeared “to have already occurred prior to the radiation exposure” brought on by the meltdown at Daiichi, and were “smaller tumors on average, than those seen in Japan before the disaster.”

Immediately after the disaster, 368,000 people were screened for thyroid cancers and a subsequent 380,000 more people were screen from April 2014 to March 2015.

• 113 people had suspected malignancies
• 25 were identified with thyroid cancer
• 6 underwent surgery
• 1 confirmed case of thyroid cancer

These findings are in contradiction to a recent study published by Okayama University which uncovered an excess of thyroid cancer cases among children and adolescents who live near the plant.

This study encompassed 298,577 children and teenagers. Among those, 2,251 tested positive for thyroid cancer at the end of 2014.

Upon further research, it was found that 110 thyroid cases were officially detected, 86 of those were publicly confirmed and 1 was diagnosed a benign tumor.
