The CERN Cloud experiment (CCE) coalition including researchers from Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Engineering and Mellon College of Science have published a study on the use of small atmospheric particles to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Reto Knutti, climate modeler for the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (SFIT) explained how clouds can be counted in predicting the future of global warming; while “understanding how manmade emissions affect the atmosphere”.

In fact, “about one-third of the warming by greenhouse gas emissions is masked by this aerosol cooling, but the fraction could be as large as half and as little as almost nothing.”

The CCE team experimented with a “large chamber to mimic the atmosphere and examine the formation and growth of aerosol particles and the clouds that they become.”

With the planet’s temperature “more than 0.8C than it was in the pre=industrial epoch”, scientists are expecting another rise in temps due to “hidden warming”.

Natural aerosol particles which seed clouds come from organic substances such as trees. In conjunction with current findings, “this means that even before the industrialization aerosol particles were formed from gaseous precursors in the atmosphere — resulting in higher concentrations than had previously been assumed.”

Scientists know that there weren’t necessarily “more clouds in” pre-Industrial days; however those clouds “probably consisted of more and smaller droplets, so that they were brighter and reflected more sunlight back to space.”

This practice has its roots in the early 19th century.

By altering natural cloud structure, the size of water molecules could be manipulated and converted into supercooled liquid water that would become ice particles.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has conducted research into cloud seeding with projects such as Project Skywater and the Atmospheric Modification Program that studied the effects of geoengineering on summer and winter seasons.

This led to the Weather Damage Modification Program (WDMP) that released a study in 2003 which explained geoengineering and other cloud seeding modification programs were highly efficient and should become normal practice.

And yet, this scientific experimentation has been known to go awry. For example, in 2009 cloud seeding experiments conducted by the government of China in the city of Beijing caused massive damage as the capital’s streets were blanketed in snowfall so thick that it caused delays in travel for residents.

This experiment was so successful that temperatures dropped to 2C (29 Fahrenheit). According to Zhang Qiang, then head of the Beijing Weather Modification Office (BWMO) said: “We won’t miss any opportunity of artificial precipitation since Beijing is suffering from the lingering drought.”

The BWMO used silver iodide in the atmosphere via aerosols created by planes. The silver iodide particles generated supercharged cloud formations that facilitated condensation.

Once these clouds were artificially formed, droplets of water molecules were injected and activated by the release of heat which created additional moisture to the ground atmosphere.
