‘Scotland vote not about politics’

Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond is to appeal to the country’s people to steer clear of politics while voting for independence.

“A ‘Yes’ vote in September is not a vote for me, or for an SNP government in 2016,” Salmond is expected to say in an address to the Scottish National Party’s (SNP) last conference before the September 18 referendum.

“It’s a vote for a government in Scotland that the people of Scotland choose, pursuing policies the people of Scotland support.”

“A government in control of tax, the economy, social security, employment, immigration, oil and gas revenues, European policy and a range of other areas currently under Westminster control,” he is set to say in the keynote speech.

“It’s about putting Scotland’s future in Scotland’s hands.”

Sources in the diplomatic corps in Edinburgh, home to nearly 50 consulates and diplomatic missions, have told the Guardian that they believe the tide of opinion has shifted significantly in recent months, which means Scottish people could vote for independence in the referendum.

The diplomats also said London’s hostility on the issues of currency, immigration and the European Union membership is creating a backlash among Scottish voters. “The UK government’s policies are pushing Scotland away,” a European consul said.

Scotland’s potential break-up from the UK wound end more than 300 years of political union.
