Search ends for missing Indonesians

The boat which was reportedly carrying 44 passengers, including women and children, sank on Thursday night about three hours into its journey from Malaysia’s southern Johor state to Indonesia’s Batam Island.

Following the incident, several ships, speed boats and helicopters were deployed to the sea to search for the missing.

However, Amran Daud, an official with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), said in a statement that search and rescue operations will come to an end at sunset Monday since chances of finding survivors had become “increasingly thin.”

“But MMEA will continue to have routine patrols in the area, and if there are new leads we will mobilize our members,” Daud added.

More than 100 rescuers searched an area of almost 3,000 square miles (7,800 square kilometers) since last Friday, he further said.

Passing fishermen saved three of the survivors while another was rescued by the authorities.

Seven passengers were also confirmed dead as three bodies were discovered on Sunday and four others were found on Monday.

Malaysia has faced many boating accidents as thousands of people from poorer regional countries such as Indonesia and Myanmar travel in rickety boats in an effort to work illegally in the relatively wealthy Southeast Asian country.

In July, Malaysian officials said they were increasing patrols to stop illegal immigrants from making the sea voyage across the waterway that separates the country from Indonesia.

An Indonesian woman lost her life and seven people went missing after their boat capsized in mid-July also off Johor state due to an engine failure.
