Second airport needed for regional access

Transport Minister Anthony Albanese has repeated calls for a second Sydney airport, saying it would guarantee access by regional airlines in the future.

He told parliament the current arrangements for regional airlines to take “slots” at the city’s Kingsford Smith Airport would not change.

Smaller regional planes now held about a quarter of the slots available between 7am and 9am – the peak time for people arriving to work in the city.

That access is protected under a slot management scheme.

“But what we know is that if the services are going to grow, we do need a second airport for Sydney,” Mr Albanese told parliament on Thursday.

“Unless we have that, the pressure will continue to be on.”
