William Tyndale produced first Bible in English in 1526 AD

924 AD-939 AD:King Athelstan was an admired honest religious hero of William Tyndale who wanted to have an English Bible for his people. King Athelstan (894–939) was King of the Anglo-Saxons from 924 to 927 & King of the English from 925 AD to his death. Modern historians regard him as the first King of England and one of the greatest Anglo-Saxon kings. He was the son of Anglo-Saxon King Edward the Elder. He never married and had no children. He was succeeded by his half-brother, Edmund.  927 AD: King Athelstan conquered the last remaining Viking kingdom, York, making him the first Anglo-Saxon ruler of the whole of England. Athelstan centralized government and increased control over the production of charters and summoned leading figures from distant areas to his councils. These meetings were also attended by rulers from outside his territory, especially Welsh kings, who thus acknowledged his overlordship. More legal texts survive from his reign than from any other 10th-century English king. They show his concern about widespread robberies, and the threat they posed to social order. His legal reforms built on those of his grandfather, Alfred the Great. Athelstan was one of the most pious West Saxon kings, and was known for collecting relics and founding churches. His household was the centre of English learning during his reign, and it laid the foundation for the Benedictine monastic reform later in the century. No other West Saxon king played as important a role in European politics as Athelstan, and he arranged the marriages of several of his sisters to continental rulers.

William Tyndale could speak seven languages and was proficient in ancient Hebrew and Greek. He was a priest whose intellectual gifts and disciplined life could have taken him a long way in the church, but Tyndale discovered Professor Erasmus’s Greek edition of the New Testament (Erasmus had been the leading teacher of Greek at Cambridge (1511 AD-1512 AD) and Tyndale wanted to translate that into English for his fellow British countrymen. Tyndale said of Erasmus that, “Christ desires his mysteries to be published abroad as widely as possible. I would that [the Gospels and the epistles of Paul] were translated into all languages, of all Christian people, and that they might be read and known.”

1523 AD: SECRET SOCIETIES OF ROMAN CHURCH & BRITISH GOVERNMENT — William Tyndale’s passion was to translate the Greek New Testament into English for his fellow countrymen and sought permission and funds from the bishop of London but was denied and told to never try that again in England. So he traveled to the free cities at the time in Europe—Hamburg, Wittenberg, Cologne, and finally to the Lutheran city of Worms. If Tyndale had not had this strong compulsion to share the good news in the New Testament with English men and women he would have had a long and prosperous life in the church, but he refused to have the good news silenced.

1525 AD-1526 AD: SECRET SOCIETIES OF ROMAN CHURCH & BRITISH GOVERNMENT — William Tyndale’s New Testament translation emerged, the first translation from Greek into the English language. 1526 AD: A full edition of the New Testament was produced by printer Peter Schoeffer in Worms. It was quickly smuggled into England and King Henry VIII, Cardinal Wolsey, Bishop Tunstall, and Sir Thomas More, among others, were furious and said Tyndale’s master was the “Antichrist.” Tyndale denounced the practice of prayer to saints. He taught justification by faith, the return of Christ, and mortality of the soul. British Authorities bought up copies of the translation which, ironically, only financed Tyndale’s further work, and also hatched plans to silence Tyndale.

The book was smuggled into England and Scotland. The precise British criminals that planned and financed the plot that murdered Tyndale are not known, but we do know it was carried out by Henry Phillips, a man who had been accused of robbing his father and of gambling himself into poverty. Henry asked Emperor Charles V to have the writer apprehended and returned to England under the terms of the Treaty of Cambrai; however, the Emperor responded that formal evidence was required before extradition. Tyndale developed his case in An Answer unto Sir Thomas More’s Dialogue.

In October, Tyndale was brought to the cross in the middle of the town square but refused to recant and instead Tyndale cried out, “Lord, open the King of England’s eyes!” He was bound to a beam with both an iron chain and a rope put around his neck. Gunpowder was added to the brush and logs. At the signal of a local official, the executioner, standing behind Tyndale, quickly tightened the noose, strangling him. Then an official took up a lighted torch and handed it to the executioner, who set the wood ablaze.
