A medical source at the emergency center said Ljubisa Bogdanovic passed away at 2:00 p.m. local time (1200 GMT) on Thursday.
The 60-year-old veteran of the Balkan Wars shot his victims, including six men, six women and a two-year-old boy, at their homes as he went from house to house on April 9 in the village of Velika Ivanca, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of the capital, Belgrade.
Milorad Veljovic, the head of the Serbian Interior Ministry’s emergencies department, said most of the victims were shot in the head “as they slept.”
The gunman had been in critical condition after shooting himself. The murder spree is said to be the country’s worst massacre in 20 years.
According to the Vecernje Novosti daily, Bogdanovic’s wife, Javorka, who was shot but survived, told police that she was in the kitchen “where I usually sleep when he entered with a gun saying there was no more life for us.” “Then he fired.”
The fatal incident initially surprised some of Bogdanovic’s neighbors who could not believe that he had committed such a crime. However, his brother-in-law, Zivomir Starcevic, said he had a history of domestic violence.
“He was brutally beating her (Javorka) when the kids were small. I know that he was nervous and had a bad temper,” Starcevic told the Vecernje Novosti, adding that Bogdanovic beat his wife with a chain.
Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic has said that the society must “pay more attention to prevent such crimes.”
Meanwhile, Veljovic said a new law would be proposed to Serbia’s parliament in the coming days. Under the proposed legislation, all those who have a license for a gun or ammunition will undergo a medical examination every three to five years.
