A bomb explosion has killed at least one policeman and injured three others in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, while two other bomb attacks have targeted the volatile Sinai Peninsula.
According to Egyptian state TV, the blast occurred on Friday in the capital’s eastern Heliopolis suburb, hitting a traffic police post near a court building.
The attack came after two explosions rocked the town of El-Tor in the southern part of the Sinai Peninsula, security officials said.
The first bomb attack targeted an army checkpoint, killing one soldier and injuring five others while the second assault, on the road between El-Tor and the tourist resort of Sharm El-Sheikh, hit a bus and wounded four passengers.
The governor of South Sinai Province identified those injured as employees of a tourism company.
No one has so far claimed responsibility for Friday’s assaults.
Last October, a car bomb attack on the security headquarters in El-Tor left three policemen dead and 55 wounded.
The restive Sinai Peninsula has long been considered a safe haven for militants and criminal gangs who use the region as a base for terror activities. In recent months, the remote desert region has been the scene of growing violence and militant attacks on security forces.
Since the ouster of former Egyptian president, Mohamed Morsi, on July 3, 2013, militant groups have launched almost daily attacks in Sinai, killing members of the security forces.
In response, Cairo has launched offensives against the militants, sending thousands of troops backed by tanks and heavy equipment into the region.
