Ex-Governor Spitzer accused of assault

Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, dubbed in a 2008 prostitution scandal as “Client 9”, has again generated embarrassing headlines.  On Monday, USA Today reported that Spitzer is the subject of an assault investigation by the New York Police Department.  This information was provided to the publication by Detective Adam Navarro, who indicated that no arrest had been made at the time and offered no details.

CNN has ascertained that the alleged assault involved a 25-year old woman named Svetlana Travis, who inferred that she and Spitzer, 56, were in an intimate relationship.  Travis said that Spitzer got upset with her and threatened, choked and threw her down.  Apparently, somewhere in the mayhem, Travis broke a glass and cut herself.

CNN sources indicated that in follow-up interviews with police investigators, Travis gave conflicting accounts of what had happened, and eventually became totally uncooperative.  She said that she was not going to press charges and was going back to Russia.

The Former New York Governor and Svetlana Travis were occupying a $1,000 per night suite at the Plaza Hotel when the incident occurred, according to the New York Post.  The police rushed to the hotel after Travis had made a 911 call in which she said that she was having a breakdown and had cut her wrist.  The police subsequently called EMS and Travis was transported to Mount Sinai West Hospital.  The Post’s sources reported that Spitzer arrived at the hospital Sunday wearing a skullcap, and later Spitzer’s spokeswoman, Lisa Linden, stated that “there is no truth to the allegations” made by Travis.

Eliot Spitzer’s relentless prosecution of white-collar crime built him a national reputation during his years of service as New York Attorney General, 1999 to 2006.  Capitalizing on his notoriety, Spitzer was elected governor of New York in 2007.  Spitzer’s fall from grace resulted from his entanglement in a 2008 prostitution-ring investigation.  The Former Governor was a customer of Ashley Dupree, one of the ring’s call girls; and because of the way he was identified in court documents, he became infamously known as  “Client 9”.  The pressures from the scandal forced Spitzer to resign the governorship and doomed his political career, but no criminal charges were brought against him in the matter.
