A shackled U.S. citizen pleaded guilty today to charges of defaming Thailand’s royal family – a grave crime in the south-east Asian kingdom that is punishable by up to 15 years in jail.

Thai-born American Joe Gordon has been detained since late May for translating excerpts of a locally banned biography of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and posting them online.

Judges said that a sentence would be issued on November 9 for Gordon, who committed the alleged crimes years ago while living in the U.S. state of Colorado, where he worked as a car salesman.

The case has raised concerns about the reach of Thai law and how it is applied to both Thai nationals and foreign visitors.

Thailand has the most severe lese-majesty (crimes against sovereigns) laws in the world, and critics say they have been increasingly abused by political rivals to harass opponents.

  1. I am happy to see that this story came out. It is another example of how disfunctional dictatorships operate and, a good reminder of why people came to America and why our founding fathers created a Constitution and Bill of rights.
In the back of everyones hard coded memory there exists the history of what our ancestors
experienced and suffered through at the hands of the feudalistic leaders.
Great leaders will always listen to constructive criticism and they will try to improve the quality
    of life for us all.
Disfunctional leaders will consider themselves to be superior to all, and then treat the common man like a dumb animal or a pet.
Wouldn’t it be funny if this crooked Thailand fake leader came to the US and one of the 3 letter agencies duct taped him and took him away and then put him in a kangeroo court and then found him guilty of some fake crime and threw him in the slammer for 15 years?
    Never say never.
