We were on our way home when we saw a Post Falls PD car with a Kootenai County Sheriff following behind. We were discussing how it seemed like a waste of tax payer dollars for the two to be patrolling together and how they probably did it to help each other get quotas when officer Ballard flipped his lights on.
My boyfriend pulled the car over only to find out he did nothing to be pulled over, but that Ballard ran the plates and saw a warrant. We all assumed it was my ex. When asked for our IDs I exercised my rights and that’s when things went downhill.
I asked if I was suspected of a crime and since I wasn’t, I didn’t need to show ID. He insisted that he wanted to know who he was talking to. I replied, “You’re talking to me and since I am not suspected of a crime, it is my right not to show you my ID.” He knew he’d been had and at this point his fellow pig (Sherriff) had walked up and heard me exercise my rights. After a moment of silence, Meehan whispered, “Is she wearing a seatbelt?” They were trying to get me for anything. Ballard looked in the car and had seen I removed my belt to grab the insurance. He said, “Oh! No, she isn’t.”
At this point my brother in the back says, “She has three passenger witnesses who saw her wearing it and besides you can’t write a ticket to someone whose identity you don’t even know.” I sense the tension rising and since I’ve stood my ground, made my point, and made the officers look petty, I take my freedom and exit the car and walk up the road.
However, my boyfriend- a young, combat vet, still in the reserves, no criminal record (besides a speeding ticket) finds out his license is suspended over a speeding ticket in another state years ago. In Idaho, you get a DWP and released while another licensed driver (which was my brother) gets behind the wheel and you’re on your way.
I watched as Ballard put my boyfriend in cuffs with aggression. The entire time my boyfriend was compliant and mellow. As Ballard talked to my brother, who told Ballard he was being excessive and it was unnecessary to arrest a vet who unknowingly had a suspended license, my boyfriend was trying to ask Ballard about what was happening. Ballard told him he’d “Bash [my boyfriend’s] head into the car if you turn around again.” Mind you, he’d never been in trouble, he was just trying to understand what was happening. Once Ballard got what he wanted, Meehan drove off.
Court went well and my boyfriend got the minimum. These traffic cops thought they were heroes, calling my boyfriend a criminal. It just goes to prove that these pigs drive around HOPING for a fight – unless you know your rights. Exercise your rights every chance you can. They are your rights. Every citizen in their eyes is a potential criminal and quotas must be met.
