The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics has released a report showing the sharp rise in suicides in the US over the past 2 years.

Between 1999 and 2014, suicide incidents have risen by 24% with an increase of 2% just after 2006 and nearly a 1% rise in the previous years. As of 2 years ago, 42,773 Americans killed themselves.

Psychotherapist Katherine King explained that access to guns is a major part of the problem. King said: “Means is a very important part of any suicide risk assessment. If people with suicidal ideation also have the means available to them, they’re more likely to do it. There’s a certain impulsiveness to suicide, and when the tools are readily available, there is an increase in risk.”

But these factors can be influenced by social isolation and depression as Americans choose suffocation or strangulation by hanging as their preferred method for ending their life.

King maintains: “Depression and thoughts about suicide are two separate things. A person can have suicidal thoughts, but not be depressed, and vice versa. Yes, it’s generally associated with depression and other mood disorders, but it has also been linked to other factors, especially life and family events (such as losing one’s job or a life partner). There’s also a contagious aspect to it. Vulnerable people who have more exposure to suicide do have an elevated risk of dying by suicide themselves.”

For women, the suicide rate has risen faster than their male counterparts. The group most effected are white, middle-aged men and women. Their life expectancy has diminished making 45 to 65 year olds at an 80% increase risk for ending their life.

Conversely, young girls ages 5 to 14 are also at an elevated risk for suicide. The reason being their vulnerability and “a lot of changes going on”. Stress, self-doubt and the pressure to succeed is proving to be a potent combination for preteens unsure of their place in society.

Kristin Holland, behavioral scientist for the CDC Division of Violence Prevention Surveillance (VPS) said : “Suicide is not just a mental health issue — it is a public health issue, and it is preventable. There are quite a few programs that have been shown to effectively prevent suicide, and at the CDC we are continuing to evaluate innovative suicide prevention strategies.”

The cause of this epidemic is unknown; however the recent economic downturn taken by the US since 2008, combined with the increase use in prescription painkillers such as opioids and drug addiction to heroin are contributing to the problem – as well as domestic violence, social dislocation and chronic medical problems also play a role.

Christine Moutier, chief medical officer for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), commented : “Our nation has not made the level of investment on a federal level that can have the positive effect on suicide that has happened for the other leading causes of death.”
