8100145_GDeacon James Smith of the St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church said they were dismissing from choir rehearsal Wednesday night around 8 when he noticed the bullet hole in the back door of the building.

“We didn’t hear anything because music was playing inside, and we wouldn’t have been able to hear anything,” Smith said.

“There’s so much going on in this day and time that it’s just a shame that things like that would happen,” Smith said.

“People have no reverence for home, family, and the church,” St. Matthew’s Chief Administrator Willie Slate said. “We don’t want people to be in a place of worship and be in fear.”

News of the shooting broke just hours after a tragic racially motivated act of domestic terrorism on a historic black church in Charleston, S.C., that left nine people, including church pastor and state senator the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, dead.

Despite the fact that both of these predominately black churches were attacked on the same night Memphis PD says, “There is nothing indicating that this shooting is connected in any way to the shooting in South Carolina.” The MPD also stated it has an ongoing investigation.
