Sign the petition to demand White House, govt. buildings become ‘gun free zones’

(NaturalNews) President Barack Obama has vowed to use the power of his office to seek sweeping new gun control measures to kick off his second term in January, a new petition posted on the White House’s We the People website is calling on the administration to practice what it preaches for ordinary Americans.

Specifically, the petition demands that the president issue an executive order amending the 1990 Gun-Free School Zones Act to “establish the White House, all federal buildings and federal events as gun free zones and all federal security personnel will turn in their guns.”

Eliminating a double standard

“We also demand the order apply to private schools such as Sidwell Friends School attended by the president’s daughters,” says the petition, which was initiated by talk show host and InfoWars.com founder Alex Jones.

“This petition is a response to government and corporate media dismissing a call for armed guards at schools following the Sandy Hook shooting. Jones and Infowars.com believe there should not be a double standard,” the petition says. “If the government believes gun free zones are a solution for citizens, the same standard should apply to government servants and employees.”

As of this writing, the petition had garnered more than 10,000 signatures; 25,000 are needed by January 27 in order to require the administration to officially examine the issue and respond.

According to The Huffington Post, Obama plans to quickly push for new gun control and immigration reform measures beginning this month:

An Obama administration official said the president plans to push for immigration reform this January. The official, who spoke about legislative plans only on condition of anonymity, said that coming standoffs over deficit reduction are unlikely to drain momentum from other priorities. The White House plans to push forward quickly, not just on immigration reform but gun control laws as well.

There were no details regarding the manner of gun control legislation Obama would seek, but if what lawmakers are doing in his own home state of Illinois – where he was once a state senator – are any indication, they could be extreme (that they would be unconstitutional really goes without saying).

As Natural News reported Dec. 3, reports earlier in the day said two bills approved by a Democrat-controlled Senate panel seek to ban the possession, delivery, sale and transfer of semiautomatic handguns and rifles, as well as limiting magazines to no more than 10 rounds.

Per Fox News:

National Rifle Association lobbyist Todd Vandermyde told lawmakers the bill would restrict about 75 percent of handguns and 50 percent of long guns in circulation today. He also said it would treat law-abiding gun owners like criminals, and is in conflict with Second Amendment rights upheld by the courts.

“I’ve never seen a piece of legislation that tramples on so many court decisions,” Vandermyde said.

Illinois Gov. Quinn tried gun ban last summer

An investigation by Natural News found that earlier this summer, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn vetoed legislation introduced by Senate President John Cullerton, SB 681, that amended the state’s Firearm Owners Identification Card Act to permit “an Illinois resident to purchase ammunition from a person within or outside of Illinois if shipment is by United States mail or by a private express carrier authorized by federal law to ship ammunition,” according to a legislative summary.

Quinn issued an amendatory veto, in which he recommended the measure be changed to include an assault weapons ban and bans on high-capacity magazines.

“As Governor, it is my foremost duty to protect the citizens of Illinois, especially our children, from deadly violence,” Quinn wrote in a letter to the General Assembly, explaining his veto and recommendations.

“I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution- the right to bear arms,” he said. “However, the proliferation of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines undermines public safety and the right of personal security of every citizen.”

“Banning assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines will make Illinois a safer place to live,” Quinn wrote.
