TCP : President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi met Saturday with Russian special envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev, and discussed the international efforts to eradicate terrorism of the Islamic State (IS) group, said Egyptian Presidential spokesperson Alaa Youssef in a statement.
“Both sides stressed the full rejection of terrorism in all its forms and manifestation in the region and the need to stop the sources of its funding and arming,” Youssef added.
The two sides also agreed that reaching a settlement on the Syrian crisis could result in putting an end to terrorist activity carried out by extremist groups, Youssef continued.
On Oct. 8, Sisi called his Russian Counterpart Vladimir Putin to discuss means of combating terrorism in the region, amid ongoing Russian airstrikes on Islamic State militants in restive Syria.
Russia’s recent strikes launched in Syria have raised concerns among the countries in the international coalition fighting the Islamic State group. Moscow has been seen as a staunch ally of the Assad regime, which many western countries believe should step down in order to end the four-year-old war.
Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry said previously that the intervention in Syria will have an impact on “confining and eliminating terrorism.”
