Sister of man beaten to death seeks info

The distraught sister of a man savagely beaten to death and then stuffed in a cupboard at an inner Sydney apartment block has made an emotional appeal for witnesses to come forward.

Rodney Scarman’s body was found dumped in a communal area of a housing commission unit block in Walker Street, Waterloo, early on Boxing Day.

An autopsy showed the 51-year-old died a violent death, suffering significant injuries to most of his body.

Police said on Wednesday he was the victim of a violent physical assault, with no weapon involved.

Detectives are still trying to establish exactly where he died.

“We’re appealing to anyone that has seen Rodney or spoken with Rodney around Christmas Day or heard anything,” Mr Scarman’s sister, Robyn Turner, told reporters in Sydney.

A $1000 reward has been offered for information leading to Mr Scarman’s attacker being caught.

Ms Turner farewelled her brother during a funeral service in Minchinbury, Sydney’s west, on Wednesday morning, but said she was unsure she’d ever get over his death.

“I don’t know if you ever get closure after you have someone close to you that has lost their life in this way,” she said.

Ms Turner described her brother as a complex, creative man whose lifestyle led him to live in the Waterloo area.

He lived alone with two pets.

Redfern local area police commander Luke Freudenstein said the attack was savage and opportunistic, but a motive was not yet clear.

“The savagery of the attack makes us believe it was either one person, a very, very strong person, or more than one,” he added.

“At this stage we just think it’s a local, opportunistic crime.”

He said police have examined CCTV footage shot in the area around the time of the attack, but refused to elaborate on what it showed.

“We’ve spoken to a lot of people, a lot of people in Walker Street and we have some good leads,” Supt Freudenstein added.

“It’s pretty early in the investigation, but we’re confident.”
